The Stigma-Free Glossary provides the opportunity for people to acknowledge the language that is most inclusive when referring to someone from their community. It is the Stigma-Free Mental Health Society’s hope that students and school staff will have a better understanding of the most inclusive terminology with this educational tool. The glossary equips individuals with inclusive language when referring to someone from a specific community or identity category and also an understanding of why that term is the most inclusive. Each new section will consist of inclusive terms from different communities.
The Stigma-Free Mental Health Society acknowledges that not all terms are universally preferred by everyone within a community and we urge you to always ask what terms people prefer and be open to learning about their preference. Self-determination is key for inclusion to happen. We also acknowledge that language is not static and we will continue to update this resource to keep it as relevant as possible.
The Stigma-Free Mental Health Society begins with a section on mental health and mental illness and will grow in the upcoming months to include terminology from more communities.
